Brendale is where the northern corridor keeps its trades. Fabrication, transport, warehousing, trade supply and the building companies that service the whole region operate out of the estates there, with the Strathpine retail centre alongside it. It is the most award-dense pocket in North Brisbane, and construction awards are among the most detailed in the system.
Two things come up constantly. The first is apprentices: rates step up with each stage of the apprenticeship, and if nobody is watching the anniversary, a second-year apprentice stays on first-year money. Over a four-year apprenticeship that becomes a substantial back-payment, and it is entirely avoidable with a calendar reminder.
The second is the contractor question. Engaging tradespeople on an ABN is completely normal and often entirely legitimate, but since August 2024 the test looks at the whole working relationship rather than what the contract says. If someone works only for you, to your schedule, with your equipment, the paperwork will not settle it. That is the single most expensive misclassification in the system, because it compounds across leave, super and tax at the same time.
